[Men's Outdoor Track & Field] Kyle Anderson finishes SAU Career with All-American ...

Comments

GULF SHORES, AL – Spring Arbor University's men's track and field program sent two athletes to represent the Cougars at the NAIA National Championships held in Gul Shores, Alabama.  Dewayne Gray qualified in two events, the 100m and 200m sprints, and Kyle Anderson qualified for the 26.2 mile Marathon.

"Both of these men have played key roles in the development of the Track & Field expansion here at Spring Arbor University," said Head Coach, Dante Ottolini.  "I was excited to see what they could do at this biggest stage, and I am very thankful to have been able to make this journey with them."

Gray competed in the 200m semifinals on Friday but was unable to make it to the finals.  Gray sat out most of this season with nagging injuries and while he did compete, the down time took its toll on the Cougar's speedster.

In last night's 100m semifinal race, Gray was also unable to advance to the finals, but ended his career as an eight time NAIA National Championship qualifier, a five time Conference Champion, a two time NCCAA National Champion and owns six Spring Arbor University records.

"I wish SAU could have seen him compete at home to witness his interaction and respect he had from coaches, competitors and officials," continued Ottolini.  "Dewayne represented SAU in unbelievable ways."

The NAIA holds the Marathon on the last day of the Championships and for Anderson it was an early morning to get his metabolism started and prepare for the longest event in the meet.

Many of Anderson's family made the trip south to watch the SAU Senior compete in his final collegiate event and were not disappointed as Anderson ran the race of his life.

Anderson placed fourth in the event in a blistering time of 2:37:08.90 to earn All-American honors.  It was his first attempt at the full Marathon.  Anderson qualified for the event based on his time in a half-marathon.  The All-American honor was also Anderson's fifth in his career.

"I am so proud of Kyle," said Ottolini.  "He ran this in brutal head and humidity and to finish this race was a major accomplishment, but to make this your highest finish in a National Championship is very special.  Almost half the field didn't finish the race."

Anderson's fourth place finish gave Spring Arbor University five points which placed them in 42nd place out of the 100's of school that sent athletes to the event.
